Why the luteal phase can feel like a different version of you

For many women with PMDD or severe PMS, the luteal phase is the point where things begin to shift.

The luteal phase is the time between ovulation and your period. For some women, that shift brings a clear drop in energy and mood, and everyday things start to feel harder.

One week you’re getting through your days fine. Then suddenly you’re not. Your energy drops. Your patience is gone. Things that felt manageable a few days ago now feel like too much.

You might snap more easily. Cry over small things. Shut down in conversations. Or just feel overwhelmed by everything at once, even when nothing obvious has changed.

It can be especially confusing when you know this isn’t how you usually are. You remember how you felt last week. You know you’re capable. But right now, that version of you feels far away.

This tends to happen at the same point in the cycle each month. After ovulation, things dip. Then, once your period starts, they usually ease again.

For many women, luteal weeks are quieter weeks by default. Plans get cancelled. Days get smaller. You do less, because that’s all you can manage at the time.

When the luteal phase ends, the contrast can be huge. Energy comes back. Your head clears. Over time, noticing that this rise and fall follows the same rhythm can help explain why this part of the month feels so different.
